The Alsa functions alsamixer, aplay and arecord all help work this out. A reference file (.asoundrc in the RPi) that defines where things can be found.in two parts based on the Linux / Alsa sound library: So a weekend of reading, trial and error, frustration and going in circles yielded a relatively neat solution. Searching on line there are a few similar things done but, as always, nothing exactly the same, and much on older code versions that are superseded. So on doing more thinking I figured an RPi should be able to handle this. And the downside from messing it up is shorting 5v power rails and risking expensive damage at both ends. It seems similar to the Ethernet Crossover cable need, but USB crossover cables seem scarce and have some electronics in them. So instead I started exploring connecting teh Jil to the USB input on my miniDSP SHD Studio preamp - but it is also USB 2 Type B Female (2 way, in and out). The Jil USB out won't drive the Peachtree X1 USB to SPDIF/Toslink converter I have. It is a nice ADC and I would like to use it for real time listening to vinyl as well on my purely digital system. The dilemma is a Schiit Jil ADC (up to 24 bit / 192kHz) with USB 2 Type B Female out designed to go to computer for vinyl ripping. Probably a very niche application, but a successful outcome. Going slightly stir crazy in Melbourne lock down so thought I would tackle something that had been bugging me for a while.
